Acne is a common skin problem for most adolescents and also afflicts some adults. People of all ages and backgrounds have had to deal with acne at some point. Hence, there has long been a desire to prevent it or cure it. We will look at some of the causes of acne as well as some of the ways in which people treated. Our hope is that you will gain a better understanding of why people get acne and what they can do for treatment and prevention.
Can acne be more serious than simply a cosmetic issue?
Many people ask this question. Perhaps you are wondering if acne has ever gotten so bad for someone that it turned into something worse. The answer is “yes”. Though acne is a larger health issue for only some people, it is still worth noting the development of the skin irritation into something more troublesome.
In some cases, acne leads to the scarring of the skin or the outbreak of a serious infection. This form of acne is known as cystic acne. Much like its name applies, cystic acne results in a large bump or cyst. Once a cyst heals, it may leave an obvious scar. It should be noted, however, that cystic acne is rare. If you believe that your acne is turning into something more serious than the usual skin irritation, consult a doctor.
How long will acne last?
The good news is that for most people, acne is a somewhat temporary situation. Ask any teenager about acne, however, and he or she will likely tell you that a fear is being destined to a life of acne. Such is the sense of despair and embarrassment caused by acne.
These teens will be glad to know that most will stop developing acne as they near their twenties, if not sooner. They can also rest assured that in most cases, the effects of acne are much less harsh as people exit their teen years. Unfortunately for some, acne can linger for many years after puberty.
Some adults experience severe cases of acne or notice occasional outbreaks as they near their thirties and beyond. In some extremely rare cases, individuals who have never had acne develop it in their later years.
What are the mental effects of acne?
Acne may show a body’s failure to properly deal with hormonal changes. Acne can indicate that a person is not dealing with stress effectively. It may be evidence of a potentially serious allergic reaction to a medication or other element. It is not these effects of acne that tend to do the most damage, though.
More than a health issue, acne is known causing people (mainly teens) a sense of shame and embarrassment. Acne is falsely associated with being unclean. Clear, healthy skin is associated with cleanliness, while severe forms of acne are often believed to be the result of sanitary neglect. Not only that, acne can be ugly and turn people away.
Most people who experience severe acne are emotionally scarred by the social rejection, leading to adolescent emotional insecurity and a sense of self-doubt. Because of this, acne should be treated as quickly and as thoroughly as possible.
Isn’t it true that staying clean helps prevent acne?
It is always better to rid your skin of toxins and dirt that accumulate during your normal routine. So yes, to some extent, it is true that washing skin can help prevent or decrease acne. Acne is a chemical matter, and it is something that occurs beneath the surface of the skin more so than on the skin itself.
Both daily cleansing and care of one’s skin will help reduce the bacteria that rests on the skin, but they cannot lessen the testosterone levels beneath the surface of the skin that help produce acne.
Understanding this basic fact should help reduce some of the stigma attached to acne. It should also allow people who suffer from acne to take some comfort in knowing that they are not necessarily less clean than others. The truth is that they have very little control over what is going on beneath their skin.
How important is a healthy diet to preventing acne?
It is no coincidence that people who eat healthy food tend to have skin that shines and glows. In contrast, think of someone you know who eats nothing but junk food. It is likely that they have some issues with acne. Experts agree that a good, healthy diet can go a long way towards either preventing acne or helping diminish it. The Chinese believe, and have been widely accepted in their belief, that acne is solely attributed to a poor diet.
They claim that too much sugar or grease leads to the potential for acne. Thus, they discourage the consumption of excessive amounts of chocolate and fried foods. Fruits and vegetables are generally considered better for the skin and a deterrent to acne. Another factor known to eliminate acne is continual drinking of water. Drinking plenty of it is your best bet to avoid acne.

For a large number of teenagers and young adults, acne is more than a skin disorder; it is a very painful condition that usually affects the social life of such individuals. With the obsession of the media on physical appearance, many teenagers and young adults get frustrated feeling that they can not be as attractive as the models, actors, and singers they see on television. This is chiefly due to the outbreak of acne pimples on their skins.

If your acne condition is termed as “mild” meaning that you only get a little amount of pimples on your face, then it seems the best treatment for you would be a topical medication which is usually referred to as an over the counter acne treatment. There are quite a number of over the counter products to choose from as they come in various forms like: creams, ointments, soaps and facial pads.

Topical medications usually contain the same active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic aid. These ingredients work by killing bacteria on the affected areas of your skin or by peeling a very thin layer of your skin, which opens up your previously blocked hair pores. When you use such products daily, it cleanses your skin and prevents dryness. These ingredients have the after-effect of providing a thin protective layer on the surface of your skin. This helps in protecting your skin against bacterial infections, healing existing pimples, refreshing complexion, purifying pores, drying up and preventing new pimples. These ingredients are very effective in combating mild to moderate acne problem.

Most dermatologist and doctors tend to recommend the use of products that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid for combating acne. Although these products are effective in combating some forms of the skin problem, they are not enough for severe sufferers or some certain types like cystic acne.

If you’re a teenager or a young adult and you’re afflicted with a severe form of acne, I guessed you must have tried some creams, lotions or gels that have only slightly improved your condition. Since one of the main causes of your skin problem is due to over-active hormones, it is only logical for dermatologist and doctors to prescribe acne pills which work on the inside of the body in an attempt to correct hormonal and chemical imbalances in your body system. In case you are afflicted with Cystic acne, it is certain that you have over-active hormones, which is definitely one of the root causes of the problem.

The most common acne pills prescribed by doctors are accutane, and antibiotics like tetracycline, clindamycin, and erythromycin. Although topical forms of these antibiotics are available, a large number of doctors and dermatologist tend to prescribe the oral form. They work in killing the bacteria that contribute in the formation of pimples. But the downside of most antibiotics is that with time the bacterium on the skin develops resistance to it.

Another category of acne pills used in treatment is the hormonal treatment, which are effective in women. Cortisone, Cyproterone and drospirenone work at decreasing the excessive amount of oil produced in the hair pores.

Accutane as previously mentioned is also an acne pill that doctors prescribed in treating severe cases of acne. A large number of sufferers have found relief from their breakouts while using accutane. Accutane simply reduces the amount of oil produced by your skin. One major risk of taking accutane pills is the harmful effects it has on pregnant women and nursing mothers, which is in the form of birth defects. So Is There Any Oral Medication For Acne Without Side Effects?

With all the following pills mentioned which seem to have one downside or the other, most sufferers would wonder if there actually were a magical pill, which could improve their condition. If you suffer from acne it would interest you to know that there are quite a number of pills in the market, which combat the root causes of your problem – which is usually due to chemical and hormonal imbalances. These acne pills contain antioxidants and herbal extracts which helps in eliminating the free radicals that are dangerous to your skin and promote infections. They also fight inflammation to reduce the redness you see on your skin and heal damaged skin.

Although using the acne pills found in the acnezine and clear-pores systems would give you improvement on your skin texture and prevent formation of new zits. However these systems take no chances by also providing an external “topical” medication, which cleanses the hair pores and fights acne-causing bacteria. In order words these systems combat the problem from the inside and the outside of your body.

If you suffer from a severe case of acne then I will certain ask you to take action by ridding your skin of pimples by using a quality skin care product that fights the problem at its roots and also on the skin. One benefits of using an internal and external treatment is that your pimples problem would be gone in the shortest possible time, as you do no have to wait long periods to begin seeing relief.

A product like the acnezine skin care system was what I used in erasing pimples off my face, it contains a moisturizing cream and a Skin Anti-Oxidant Capsule, which ensures that your skin texture improves. An excellent skin care system on the market, which is by far the number one acne system, is the clear pores system. It is capable of combating both body and facial acne. It consists of a deep cleansing facial/body wash, facial/body protection cream and an herbal supplement. This system is very effective for severe sufferers as it ensures total acne treatment. The healthy pores system is also a very good skin care product that has solved the problem of acne pimples for a large number of former sufferers.

So what are you waiting for, go do something about your acne problem now!!!

Looking for info on natural ways to clear up acne? Here, I will give alternative ways that can help you cure acne and not have to buy another over-the-counter acne treatment.

Several different types of acne treatments are right around the house. Baking soda would be used as a scrub. If it’s a mask you need, use oatmeal. There are also natural ways you can exfoliate and get rid of acne scars.

Acne spots can be a big problem. The application of lemon/lime can exfoliate skin quite well, stopping acne spots right in their tracks. For active acne spots, you can use some that would need to be applied directly to them. For this one could use tea tree oil. There are diluted versions that can be applied over the entire face. This gives you a general idea of certain things you could use to help acne naturally.

Using these Forms for clearing up your acne not only work very well, but will save you money! The prices of advanced over-the-counter acne treatments rise continually. The more chemicals that are being put in these acne treatments, the better chance of slowing the healing process. You could take things a step further and go for internal acne treatments.

Before going the internal acne treatment route, try a combination of the above mentioned natural products, with vitamin B5. Small amounts of B5 won’t do the trick so make sure you do research on the ways to use it effectively.

Now you have some alternatives to over-the-counter products. I don’t recommend trying what has been mentioned above unless you know what you’re doing.

Acne can be treated effectively if people with acne take certain measures. These days, a lot of acne treatments, both prescription and non prescription are available on the market.

Non prescription acne medicines are available for mild acne. These are actually topical acne products tried first prior to consulting a dermatologist. These have the capacity to control the excess oil in the skin. It reduces shedding of skin cells and exterminates bacteria.

Here are some common non prescription treatments available for acne:

a)	Antibacterials

These soaps and cleansers work towards exterminating the bacteria that produce acne. The main ingredient in antibacterials is Triclosan. It is a germ killer. If used in excess, these products can result in excessive dryness of the skin.

b)	Benzoyl Peroxide

This is a common treatment for, acne that’s widely available. One requires to use this product on a regular basis for mild acne. It is available in the form of creams, lotions and cleansers. These kill bacteria that cause pimples. Benzoyl peroxide is also available in different strengths such as 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. The skin on the bodies is thicker than the face. Hence 10% Benzoyl is usually prescribed for body acne.

c)	Salicylic Acid

This medication works differently. It doesn’t work towards killing bacteria like the other medicines mentioned above. It loosens the clogged pores that prevent pimples from forming. It is widely used in cleansers, astringents and lotions. When it comes to eliminating whiteheads and blackheads, this medication is really effective.

d)	Alpha-hydroxy Acids

This medicine usually found in combination with several other acne fighting substances. It is derived from acids found in fruit, sugar and milk. It does not kill bacteria. It assists in removal of dead skin cells that may clog pores. You can get alpha-hydroxy acid under the name of fruit extracts, beta-hydroxy acid and tri-alpha-hydroxy acids.

Acne treatment with prescription medicines:

a)	Retinoids

It is a common treatment for acne. Retin – A is offered as a lotion, cream and gel. It is very effective as it gets under the skin in order to enhance the process of shedding of skin cells and loosen plugs. It also helps in fading marks on skin that are a result of earlier pimples.

b)	Topical antibiotics

These are effective on moderately severe acne. These medications work towards destroying the bacteria on the surface of the skin.

c)	Oral antibiotics

These drugs work within the body. Oral antibiotics are generally prescribed for a period of three years. These exterminate the bacteria that contribute to acne. However, they can even take many months to enhance the condition of skin. Erythromycin, tetracycline and minocycline are the most commonly prescribed antibiotics.

d)	Accutane

It treats severe cases of acne. The medication is prepared from vitamin A and performs several functions. It prepares oil glands smaller and reduces the amount of sebum produced. It also minimizes the shedding of skin cells and kills bacteria. Blood tests are required when the patient is on this drug.

There are several effective treatments available for acne these days. Contact a dermatologist for best results.

” Thou are all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.” Song of Solomon 4:7.
The above passage was taken from the old testament in the Bible. Even then, people equated beauty with good clear skin. The unfortunate who have acne, or worse, acne scars, while no longer publicly ostracised today, are still not regarded as beautiful as though with clear skin.
Acne scars are terrible to have. They are there as permanent reminders, even after the acne has long run it’s course and the redness is gone. Some people develop severe acne spots, and yet, when the acne resolves, there is no trace of the disease. Others may have smaller, less red spots, but they can scar quite badly. Any form of scarring should be treated as severe acne, and needs aggressive treatment.
There are different types of acne scars. Some are shallow. Often, they are deep, called “ice-pick” scars. These are the result of a deep-seated severe inflammatory reaction in the hair follicle and sebaceous gland. These are hard to disguise with cosmetics and almost impossible to remove surgically.
Other forms of acne scars include keloid scars. These start like ordinary scars but can continue to grow so that they become heaped up and hard. These are difficult to treat.
Prevention of acne scars is still the best treatment. However, if acne scars have formed, these are some of the methods available to treat them.
Cryotherapy involves freezing the area of skin where shallow acne scars have formed. The hope was that peeling would occur but it did not work well. However, cryotherapy can still sometimes be used for severe acne cysts. But the treatment in itself can cause scarring.
Dermabrasion involves removing top layers of skin where scars are formed. This can be effective if shallow scars are present. It is not useful for ice-pick scars.
Lasers may be used to recontour scar tissue and reduce the redness of skin around healed acne lesions. In some cases, a single treatment is all that will be necessary to achieve permanent results. Because the skin absorbs powerful bursts of energy from the laser, there may be post-treatment redness for several months.
Chemical peels work on the same principle with the aim of using a powerful chemical irritant to remove the top layers of the skin.
Collagen implants work by injecting collagen, a normal substance of the body. It is injected under the skin to “stretch” and “fill out” certain types of superficial and deep soft scars. Collagen treatment usually does not work as well for ice-pick scars and keloids. Cosmetic benefit from collagen injection usually lasts 3 to 6 months.
Fat can be taken from another site on your own body and prepared for injection into your skin. The fat is injected beneath the surface of the skin to elevate depressed scars. This method is usually used to correct deep contour defects caused by scarring from nodulocystic acne. Because the fat is reabsorbed into the skin over a period of 6 to 18 months, the procedure usually must be repeated.
For very bad ice pick scars, skin surgery may need to be considered. Some ice-pick scars may be removed by “punch” excision of each individual scar. Each scar is excised down to the layer of subcutaneous fat and the resulting hole in the skin may be repaired with sutures or with a small skin graft.
As I said, prevention of acne scar formation is still the best. The final decision about which form of treatment you choose for removal of acne scars will depend on the type of treatment that is best for you in terms of your type of skin, the cost, what you want the treatment to accomplish, and the possibility that some types of treatment may result in more scarring.
You will also need to consider the way you feel about scars, the severity of your scars and seek a dermatologist’s expert opinion as to whether scar treatment is justified in your particular case, and what scar treatment will be most effective for you.

Cystic acne has become a common skin problem these days. However, most people are unaware of the term ‘cystic acne’. Cystic acne is a serious problem of skin that occurs when people deal with acne pimples roughly. This process results in formation of the cystic acne.

Cystic acne can be defined as the most severe kind of acne. Under this type of acne, the pimples work towards forming cysts. These are actually filled with pus. The problem results in scarring of the skin. These tend to aggravate more when the cysts are squeezed to express the pus. This results in a permanent scar.

There are several effective methods available these days to treat cystic acne. Don’t expect acne creams and gets to work wonders when the skin is suffering from cystic acne. Experts suggest injectable medication or oral antibiotics that are required to cure the cystic acne.

You should visit a good doctor to prescribe you some effective drugs to treat cystic acne. Under circumstances where initial antibiotic treatment proves ineffective, your doctor will prescribe you a stronger medication course to treat the problems.

These are also some effective methods that can treat cystic acne permanently. Cystic acne is termed as one of the most severe forms of acne that gets deeply penetrated in to the skin layers. You should try to understand the causes that result in cystic acne.

You can characterize cystic acne by hard, semi-liquid bumps that grow below the skin with the potential of causing severe acne scars. Acne cysts are quite larger and painful as compared to whiteheads and conventional spots. This type of acne is a result of oil gland blockage that triggers inflammation and pus in the surrounding tissue area.

Cystic acne is further worsened by Retention keratosis, under, this condition, skin cells of cystic acne are shed improperly. This further leads to clogging of the skin follicles and the dead cells in conjunction with the over production of sebum. This environment is perfect for growth of bacterial infections. The infection has potential of spreading to other follicles that can further aggravate the inflammation, swelling and redness.

Experts believe that natural approach works towards fixing the internal problem those results in acne. The holistic approach utilizes multidimensional protocols such as supplementation, dietary changes, rebuilding of the organs of elimination and internal as well as external cleansing. The whole process neutralizes an environment that encourages formation of acne work better to treat cystic acne in the long run. This treatment also prevents further acne scars.

Any oral medication should be taken, under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Isotretinoin is the most common and most powerful drug prescribed for cystic acne treatment. It can be defined as a man-made form of retinoid or vitamin A. It is taken in pill form. It is the only medicine that effectively treats excess oil productions, inflammation and clogged skin pores. The pill is supported to be taken up to twenty weeks and does not require more than one course of therapy in order to cure the problem.

Pregnant women should avoid taking this medicine as there is a possibility of birth defects to a developing fetus. You also require to go for regular checkups while using this medicine.

There are many variations of acne, ranging from mild to severe. Acne vulgaris is the most common form of acne which includes several types of pimples. This type of acne can cause blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

The blackhead is formed when it has reached the top of the skin and opened. It occurs in particularly blocked pores. Sebum which can cause oily skin, dead cells, and bacteria are slowly draining to the surface of the skin and the black color is not due to dirt, but is dried oil caused by the pigments in the skin being exposed to air. Blackheads will take a long time to clear up.

A whitehead is a small white bump on the skin that has not opened on the top of the skin. Unlike blackheads, whiteheads are contained beneath the surface of the skin. It formed when a pore is completely blocked, trapping sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells, causing a white appearance on the surface. Whiteheads normally have a shorter life cycle than blackheads.

Papules are small pink bumps on the skin that are tender to the touch. they are inflamed, red, tender bumps with no head. They will cause irritation, so bear in mind that not to touch them or squeeze them which will do no good, and may exacerbate scarring.

Pustules are similar to whiteheads, but are inflamed. They appear as red circles with a white or yellow center. They are what most people call pimples or zits. Squeezing or popping a pustule is equally proscribed.

Nodules are hard lumps underneath the surface of the skin which can be painful and last for several months. Nodules are much larger than those mentioned above. Unresolved nodules can sometimes leave an impaction behind, which can flare again and again. It is not at all advisable to squeeze or pop them. You may cause severe trauma to the skin and the lesion may last for months longer than it normally would. This type of acne is particularly vulnerable to scarring, so it is advisable to have it treated by a dermatologist.

An acne cyst appears similar to a nodule, but is filled with pus, and has been described as having a diameter of 5mm or more across. It can be painful. Cysts can cause permanent scarring. Squeezing an acne cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last much longer than if you had left it alone. Dermatologists often have ways of lessening swelling and preventing scarring, so consult the dermatologist.

The above mentioned are main types of acne. Different types of acne do exist, each having a different cause.

With mild cases of acne topical ointments are usually the best method of treatment. More severe cases may require more drastic measures. Some options include: antibiotics either orally or in ointments and physical treatments like chemical peels and drainage.

If your acne needs physical treatment you will need to see a dermatologist to perform them. Technically popping pimples yourself is a form of physical treatment but it is not an advised method of treatment. This can lead to spreading the acne causing bacteria and scarring. Having physical treatments provided in a clinical environment such as a dermatologist’s office will provide you with the best results.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the removal of the top layer of skin; this can be achieved either chemically or through abrasion. Chemical peels work by dissolving a microscopic layer of skin cells, which opens pores and removes the build up of dead skin cells. This is usually accomplished by using salicylic acid or glycolic acid. The same think can be accomplished through abrasion using an abrasive cloth or liquid scrubbing solution. Glycolic acid can be used every two to six weeks for about six months. Salicylic acid is a much milder form of acid and is included in many over the counter face cleansers; these can be safely used on a daily basis.

Comedo Extraction

Blackheads and whiteheads (comedones) can be removed with specialized instruments at your dermatologist’s office. After the skin is numbed with an anesthetic cream the Dr. will use a pen like instrument to open the top of the comedones to remove the dead skin cells and sebum. It is typical to treat the area with an antibacterial agent after this treatment. Remember you should not try this at home because it can lead to infection and increased scarring.

Drainage

Sometimes in cases of sever acne cysts will form under the skin. Cysts can be very painful and cause severe scarring even permanent disfigurement. Some mild cysts can be treated with cortisone injections, which should clear up the cyst in a few days. More severe cysts will need to be drained and surgically removed. Draining the cyst will greatly reduce the pain and the chance of scarring. You should never try to drain a cyst at home, there is a very high risk of infection and scarring if not performed with the proper sterile instruments.

Light Therapy

This is used to combat the acne causing bacteria, it is especially useful in hard to reach places. However this may only provide shot term relief because it does nothing to combat the excessive sebum and build up of dead skin cells.

Laser treatment can often be beneficial in the treatment of acne scars. This is capable of helping with lighter surface scars as well as deeper tissue scars caused by severe cases of acne. These procedures are all still under testing and it is not known yet if the laser will cause any long-term damage to the skin.
