Acne is a skin condition that simply refuses to go away. It’s a nagging skin ailment that we commonly call pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, red or yellow spots, cystic nodules or scars. The acne prone age is between 12 and 25 years. But beware; it’s not just a teen trouble. Even in your 30s and 40s you may get acne attacks. Acne can cause lifelong scars, if left untreated. Hence, it is vital to be proactive about acne treatment, beginning right from home remedies. Acne treatment essentially involves the use of both preventive and curative products.

Preventive products

The natural way to keep off acne begins at home. If you wish to keep off acne, follow this home treatment attentively and be sure of great results.

- Keep your face spotless clean, by washing it often with a gentle anti-bacterial cleanser or some home-made natural product
- Never use greasy, oil-based moisturizers
- Never use products containing synthetic chemicals and vegetable oils
- Keep your hair off your face
- Never dig or touch scars
- Keep skin pores unclogged with products containing sulfur plus resorcinol

However, pregnant women, kids and patients under some other medication, should consult a doc before they use such products.

Medication methods

The condition of your acne will determine the treatment options. Treatment also depends on the oil balance of your skin, your gender and your existing medications. The most proactive acne treatment is with topical products (gels, creams) containing Salicylic acid, Benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, tetracycline, erythromycin or a retinoid. Many times a combination of these products also works well.

Physicians also prescribe oral medications like antibiotics, hormones, and isotretinoins. Go for such acne treatment only after knowing the side effects.

Laser treatment

Laser treatment has completely cured many. Here the laser destroys the excess oil producing glands and removes scars. It is painless, harmless but costly. However, to get rid of the existing acne you need medication.

Cystic treatment

Acute cystic acne needs cystic treatments with Accutane or isotretinoin. But, there are side effects. Since most other treatments are not effective on cystic acne, these severe products are unavoidable.

Chinese treatments

The Chinese method is a natural herbal acne treatment. They believe in getting to the root of the problem like liver ailments, emotional upsets, wind heat, damp heat, blood heat etc. “They even trace acne to reasons like a stagnant qi (energy). Their natural products do help many,” says dermatologist Dr Manela Humphrey.

Peel power

TCA Peels are an easy, safe and affordable acne treatment. “They are also more effective than other clinic or spa-based treatments,” says salon specialist Mary Roberts. Peels were earlier available only through costly treatments by skin specialists, at US$ 500- 1000 per session. These same peels are now easily available at less than US$30 from on the internet (for more information see the link below). No prescription is required either.

Chemical Peels: – Light chemical peels of glycolic acid and other chemical agents are used by your dermatologist to loosen blackheads and decrease acne papules.Comedo Extraction: – Sometimes removing comedones proves beneficial. To extract whiteheads and blackheads, your dermatologist uses a sterile pen-sized device. This procedure should only be performed by a qualified dermatologist or other medical professional. Some people attempt to extract comedones and drain cysts by squeezing or picking, which leads to worsening of the acne, scarring and infection. Tissue injured by squeezing or picking can become infected by staphylococci, streptococci and other bacteria.Drainage and Surgical Extraction:- Some large cysts do not respond to medication and may require drainage and extraction. Drainage and extraction, which is also called “acne surgery,” reduces the pain associated with these cysts and decreases the likelihood of scarring. You should not perform it at home. The “acne surgery” is performed under sterile conditions.Punch excision: – The scar is excised with a punch tool and the edges are sutured together. A dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon usually performs this procedure.Chemical peels :- A type of organic acid, most commonly glycolic, salicylic, or lactic, is applied to the skin so that a smoother layer can surface. Despite its unpleasant name, superficial peels are painless if performed properly and require no anaesthetic. Peels are typically performed several times over a period of weeks or months. The procedure can also be beneficial for active acne. Many dermatologists and cosmetologists offer this procedure, although the peels given by dermatologists are generally of a higher concentration and therefore potentially more effective. Deep peels are more aggressive and painful and require significant expertise.Subcision: – The scar is detached from deeper tissue, allowing a pool of blood to form under the scar which helps form a connective tissue under the scar, leveling it with the surface. This procedure is usually performed by a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon.Phototherapy (Laser and Light Treatments): – Several laser and light treatments are available to treat acne. Some of these laser and light treatments target only one factor that causes acne P. acnes. For many patients, this is not a comprehensive treatment for resolving their acne. Your dermatologist will determine if laser or light treatment is appropriate for you. The advantages of laser and light treatments include not having to remember to apply or take any medication and the ability to treat hard-to-reach areas, such as the back. However, laser and light treatments are very expensive, and long-term effectiveness has not been proved. Over the last several years, laser technology has also assumed an increasingly important role in the treatment of acne scars. Should you consider laser or light therapy, consult a dermatologist experienced in providing the therapy. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about his / her experience and qualifications.http://www.saynotoacne.org

Use Benzoyl Peroxide if the acne is non-inflammatory, this will exclude P. acnes bacterium .If you over-use, it causes skin dryness which is another issue altogether. If you are allergic to this drug you can use salicylic acid instead. Generally a herbal remedy would be preferable for moderate cases. For severe cases e.g. acne vulgaris use – Retin-A a gel To achieve long-term control and resolution, your dermatologist may combine therapies. The following describes some prescription medications: you may try but with consultation:- Corticosteroid Injection: Have this when you have acne cysts, which become severely inflamed.Dermatologists may inject such cysts with a much-diluted corticosteroid. This lessens the inflammation and promotes healing. The injection “melts” the cyst over a period of 3 to 5 days.IsotretinoinIsotretinoin is a potent oral retinoid that is reserved for treatment of very severe cystic acne and severe acne that has proven itself resistant to other medications. However it’s side effects use is currently under investigations. Oral Antibiotics: You will need to use these if you are suffering from moderate to severe and persistent acne, oral antibiotics would be your mainstay therapy for years. Like topical anti-microbial, oral antibiotics reduce the P. acnes population (a contributing factor in acne), which, in turn, decreases inflammation. Treatment with oral antibiotics usually begins with a higher dosage, which your dermatologist will reduce as acne resolves. Generally, antibiotics are prescribed for six months or less. Erythromycin: It is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including P. acnes. The most common side effect is irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.Tetracycline and derivatives: Tetracyclines reduce the papules and pustules (inflammatory lesions) of acne. Do not give this medication to children younger than 8 years because they can affect growth and stain teeth. If you are expectant or breast-feeding do not take this drug affects the development of the child’s bones and teeth, leading to skeletal defects Oral contraceptives have been shown to effectively clear acne in women by suppressing the overactive sebaceous glands and can be used as long-term acne therapy. I have discussed this in more details in my e-book “say no to acne” oral contraceptives should not be prescribed to women who smoke, have a blood-clotting disorder, are older than 35 or have a history of migraine headaches-without the advice of a gynecologist. The area of antibiotics is so wide that covering it in a mere newsletter would not be enough to give a clear understanding of the real issues involved .I have covered the following antibiotics:- Azelaic acid, Benzoyl peroxide, Clindamycin, Erythromycin, Sodium sulfacetamide Adapalene, Tazarotene, Tretinoin and many more. http://www.saynotoacne.org
